Books give you Wings
Such a glorious symbol. Wings. Freedom… the ability to fly. The sheer power and preciseness of their mechanism is staggering. To be able to fly free, to soar to great heights, to be rid of earthly boundaries So incredibly empowering.
The wings are such a poignant symbol of Los Angeles as well. Los Angeles literally means “The Angels” which immediately brings to mind gigantic, angelic wings. Upon arriving in Los Angeles 12 years ago, I felt so overwhelmed of the sheer size of the city. After finding my feet, I started to see the beauty in the vastness of it. I saw myself blossom not only as an individual, but as an artist. I felt like here, in this great city, I could be unafraid to be who I really was.
Over time though, my artistic resolve was corroded. Finding myself stunted and uninspired, I hid away. I wasn’t brave. I found to my surprise that my wings were bound. By my own oppression. I had allowed my precious creativity to be tethered.
This piece is a testimonial that I won’t allow myself to indulge in hiding any longer. That I will be courageous. That I’ve broken the chains from my wings and won’t be bound any longer.
