Flight

Rancho Cucamonga Public Library

The Art of Flight was commissioned by the City of Rancho Cucamonga for their Archibald Library Branch in 2015, in celebration of the library’s 20th anniversary. The installation consists of 20 books, suspended in midair as though caught in a sudden, dramatic gust. They hang in the library’s foyer, visible from multiple levels, and respond subtly to the movement of visitors, turning and swaying with each passing person.

The piece was conceived to make visible the energy contained in books; the ideas, stories, and possibilities that exist on their pages by translating it into a physical, kinetic form. The installation emphasizes playfulness and motion, transforming the act of entering the library into a minor encounter with the unexpected.

The Art of Flight is designed to engage visitors of all ages, though it is particularly popular with children, who often pause to marvel at the books’ apparent levitation. For adults, it offers a quieter appreciation: the suggestion that books can be both ordinary objects and carriers of dynamic, imaginative energy.

By combining aesthetic presence, gentle interactivity, and a nod to the magic of reading, the work seeks to highlight the transformative power of books in a communal space. It is a celebration of imagination made tangible, encouraging both curiosity and a modest sense of wonder.
